On May 19, 2023, it was announced by RBI that the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes from circulation had been decided. The deposition of these notes in banks or the exchange of these notes with other denomination notes were allowed by the RBI.

As per the statement given by the RBI, “At the close of business on May 19, 2023 a total of Rs 3.56 lakh crore of Rs 2,000 notes were in circulation. “The value of notes in circulation in this denomination has declined to Rs 8,470 crore at the close of business on February 29, 2024.” (Exchange of the 2000 Currency Note)

Rs 2,000 notes will be considered as legal tender: RBI

There was returning of a total of 97.62 percent of the notes in circulation in the denomination of Rs 2,000 (2000 Bank Note). It was also made clear by the RBI that Rs 2,000 notes will remain legal tender i.e. they will remain legal tender.

The facility of depositing or exchanging Rs 2,000 notes in its 19 offices across the country is still provided by the RBI. People can send these Rs 2,000 notes (Rs 2000 Notes Deposit) apart from this, from any post office to any RBI office through India Post. (Exchange of the 2000 Currency Note)

There can be a deposit or exchange of these notes in banks till September 30, 2023 (2000 Rupee Note Exchange and Deposit) and it had been earlier directed by the RBI to the people and institutions. People have been given the option to exchange currency at 19 RBI offices from October 8, 2023, or they should deposit the amount in their bank accounts. The facility of this exchange process is available in RBI offices of Bhopal, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, New Delhi, Chennai, Patna, Guwahati, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jammu, Kanpur and Lucknow. After Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes of Rs 2,000 had been issued by the RBI and these were withdrawn from circulation in November 2016.
