After graduation, he worked at Accenture, then owned by Arthur Andersen. In 1997, he joined a startup called Net Gravity, becoming a key figure in the company’s operations and greatly expanding its prominence In 1997, Net Gravity was acquired by DoubleClick.

He moved from California to the company’s headquarters in New York and entering the 2000s gradually became more involved in central business affairs within the company, with DoubleClick relying on him for cutting costs in the wake of the burst of the dot-com bubble.

He became business operations vice president before returning to Stanford in 2003 to pursue his MBA. While at Stanford, DoubleClick began to face serious issues stemming from its acquisition of Abacus Direct in 1999; this ultimately led to the merger being de facto annulled by Hellman & Friedman, who acquired DoubleClick and split off Abacus Direct from it.

Google

On April 13, 2007Google, agreed to acquire DoubleClick for US$3.1 Billion. The move was largely orchestrated by Google executive Susan Wojcicki, who extensively worked with Mohan for the next 15 years. Mohan played a major role in the integration process and formally joined Google in 2007.

At Google, Mohan became an extraordinarily prominent figure in business operations, to the point that when Twitter attempted to hire him as chief product officer (as David Rosenblatt was on Twitter’s board), Google paid Mohan US$ 100 million in bonuses to convince him to stay.

Similarly, a former Facebook senior executive stated that he attempted to lure Mohan as well. While at Google, he orchestrated the company’s 2010 US$ 85 million acquisition of Invite Media. Before being moved to YouTube, he was senior vice president of display and video ads at Google.

YouTube New CEO

Mohan joined YouTube in 2015 as Chief Product Officer. During his time at the company, he orchestrated many of its big releases throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, such as YouTube Music, YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Shorts.

He also attempted to combat extremist content, testifying before Congress and attending a White House summit in September 2022 to announce stricter guidelines against it. As CPO, he developed a “top-notch product and UX team,” within YouTube.

On February 16, 2023, Wojcicki, then YouTube CEO, resigned from her position. Mohan succeeded her as CEO. While he has been welcomed by many users and creators who have been displeased by Wojcicki’s tenure, many are concerned that his past support of NFTs, unpopular YouTube programs, and the removal of the dislike counter to viewers might have a much more negative impact on the site.
